Chandy New Head Of HHS OCR Civil Rights Division

 

Sunu Chandy is the new Deputy Director of the Department of Health & Human Services Office for Civil Rights (HHS OCR).  Chandy took over as the new Deputy Director for Civil Rights effective Monday, July 25, 2016.  Chandy will lead the Civil Rights Division team and will be focused on HHS OCR’s ongoing priorities, including the implementation of Section 1557, and will lead OCR’s work on Presidential and Departmental aggressive priority of investigation and enforcement of civil rights laws and regulations within HHS jurisdiction..

Chandy’s career before assuming her role as the HHS OCR Deputy Director for Civil Rights was devoted to the enforcement of civil rights laws in the public interest.  Most recently, Chandy worked as a policy consultant on federal advocacy with the Ms. Foundation, a non-profit organization for women.  Prior to that, she was the General Counsel for the D.C. Office of Human Rights (OHR).  In this role, Chandy advised on all legal matters facing OHR, including investigations of discrimination in the areas of employment, housing, education and public accommodation.  She also previously worked with the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for 15 years, litigating complex civil rights employment matters in federal court through its New York District Office.  While at EEOC, she also spearheaded multiple outreach efforts and education initiatives with advocacy groups.
